Summary

In this monograph the main problem of the development of the U.S.A. on the eve of the Civil War are explored. The author pays special attention to socioeconomic trends, abolitionist movement, political debates and the creation of the Republican party. There are also analyzed the Secessionist movement, the laws and peculiarities of the historical process in the U.S.A. of 1840s and 1850s.
A special place is reserved for portraits of scientists, philosophers, journalists and public figures: R.W. Emerson, H.D. Thoreau, H. Carey, R. Hildreth, H. Greeley, M. Fuller. These are not mere biographical sketches. The author explores the contribution of those distinguished Americans to the solution of imminent problems of the American life.
Certain attention is also paid to some aspects concerning the condition of modern historical science and the treatment of history by the U.S. society.
The monograph is addressed to specialists, students and all persons interested in problems of history.
