A conversation took place at the Russian Foreign Ministry on September 9 between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Sergey Lavrov, and the Director General of Israel"s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Aaron Abramovich, who was in Moscow to attend a seminar on Russian themes for senior Israeli diplomats.
The focus of attention was conditions in the Middle East and the tasks in stabilizing the situation and advancing the peace process in the region.
Lavrov reaffirmed full support to the Palestinian-Israeli talks for achieving a political settlement on an internationally recognized basis and to the continuing contacts between Israel and Syria.
It was noted that Russia as an active member of the Middle East Quartet of international mediators is ready to continue facilitating a just and comprehensive solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict, a settlement which would meet the basic interests of all the peoples living in the Middle East.
Abramovich was briefed on the situation in the Caucasus, resulting from the aggression of Georgia against the South Ossetian people.
In discussing Russian-Israeli relations, the sides noted with satisfaction that cooperation between the two countries has been successfully developing and deepening. The mutual desire was reaffirmed to strengthen further the existing many-sided ties.
Other topical aspects of the regional and international situation also were examined, including WMD nonproliferation themes.
As part of inter-MFA consultation, Abramovich also had meetings with Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Alexander Saltanov and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Ryabkov.
